Township Information:
Goolwa was first settled in 1841, proclaimed a River Port in 1857 and a state heritage town in 1987 to recognise Goolwa as one of the country’s most important River Ports. The town is situated on both fresh and salt water as it is the last town on the River Murray before the river meets the sea.
Goolwa, home of:

• The South Australian Wooden Boat Festival
• The first public railway in Australia established in Goolwa between Goolwa and Port Elliot in 1854
• Cittaslow Goolwa – first Australian town granted Cittaslow status in 2007
Goolwa Wharf:
The historic Goolwa Wharf precinct provides wonderful views of the River Murray and the Hindmarsh Island Bridge. From here you can see the Goolwa Barrage, board the Oscar W and enjoy a scenic cruise or be more adventurous and tour into the Coorong National Park onboard ‘Spirit of the Coorong’. You can learn more of the river trade at the Goolwa River Boat Centre, watch heritage steam trains go by, sample a beer at the brewery or wine at the cellar door; stop for a coffee or have a meal. Simply sit back and enjoy the local bird life and recreational boating activities.
